Without knowing whether or not the maiden name change notification has been completed, or is still in process…… Without knowing if the marriage has taken place, and “Certified” copies of the marriage license have been obtained….. We provide an overview; hopefully this will assist Janet at this juncture, and that of the bride reading this response. The following scenarios are some which brides have experienced. There are others, but the stage of marriage name change notification can determine the options.

Response To The Question On Bride Last Name Change & Cashing Checks In The Maiden Name

For the sake of discussion – Let us say, that the name change has taken place. Even with certain bank practices being regulated or usual, there can be creative ways a specific bank representative accommodates the paperwork void between single to married.

Scenario 1 - Smaller Bank or Independent Home Town Bank – Check In Maiden Last Name

If the check is made to Janet as the account holder, and in her maiden name, a bank may or may not cash the check. If the bank is not connected with a large chain or is an independent bank in a small town, and the bank representative knows Janet, they may cash the check, even if the account name has been changed. This would be as a courtesy to her as a known customer.

Scenario 2 - Larger or Regional or National Bank – Check In Maiden Last Name

Here, even if Janet is well known by the bank tellers or bank manager, they may not cash a check in her maiden name. In yet another scenario, Janet may have a new bank account in her married name. However, she has also temporarily included an A.K. A (acronym for "also known as."), which is that of her maiden name. In this way, both names appear on the bank account, so that checks with only her maiden name can be cashed against the account. Just as checks with only her married last name may be cased. For example – Janet Smith (maiden A.K.A) and Janet Jones (married last name).

Scenario 4 - Keeping the Old Account (Temporarily) & Starting a New Bank Account - Check In Maiden Last Name

Janet may also decide to keep her maiden name bank account, temporarily. So as to allow checks to be cashed against that account. Perhaps starting another account with the new married last name, (in-joint or not in-joint with her husband). Janet might check with her bank for details regarding the possibility of two accounts for the same person, but bearing two different last names.

Question:  "To what extent do you see hyphenated names with their "maiden name" listed before the husband's surname?" 

Larry, anecdotally, whether career professionals or not, we have not actually noted more and more brides hyphenating their maiden name with that of their husbands' surnames. At this time, it may reflect, somewhat the culture of the day. In the 1960's, 70's and 80's, it seemed to be more common in the United States. However, without statistics to back this, I can say that in the American culture, it seems to not be as usual for a woman to hold two last names. Now after saying this...... in other representative cultures within America, for example, the Mexican - American culture, it is not unusual for a bride to approach marriage, already with two last names - (that of her father and her mother). In this case, we have seen women either retain her two legal last names or  assume her husband's last name completely (dropping both maiden surnames), or dropping one surname and adding her husband's surname in hyphenation.  

 For the woman who is a Doctor, Lawyer, CPA, Contractor, or other state licensed professional, the tendency is to keep the maiden name in the career (through an AKA), but to legally assume the husband's last name. This is especially true if the bride has established a practice or professional reputation under her maiden name. Now, it is not that we don't see a bride hyphenate her legal last maiden name with that of her new husband's. It seems that our name change experts are coming across a lot more "assumption" of a husband's last name rather than hyphenation.  

Finally, we have had women report to us the problem that comes with having two last names.  Such as, people referring to them as Mrs. (husbands' last name), and not including their maiden name in the reference. This is more so verbally, than written. A woman can make certain that her hyphenated two legal last names are documented on paper. To the woman with a "hyphenated" last name, it  seems that the current American culture favours a single last name.
